You do not need a laser or a CAD plan to get a solid estimate. A tape measure, a notepad and a few rectangles will get you close enough to order confidently.
Floors
- Measure the longest length and the widest width in metres
- Multiply length × width for a simple rectangle
- For L-shapes, draw two rectangles, calculate each, then add
- Round up slightly if your tape sits between marks
Walls
- Measure each wall’s width × height separately
- Add the walls together for total wall area
- Windows and doors: subtract their area if they will not be tiled
- Splashbacks: measure the run length × height of the splashback only
Baths, units and fixed furniture
If the floor under a bath or kitchen unit will not be tiled, you can subtract that footprint. If you are unsure what will be tiled on the day, leave the area in and let your tiler trim the order — it is safer than running short.
